原文：A young man sees a sunset and, unable to understand or to express the emotion that it rouses in him, concludes that it must be the gateway to a world that lies beyond. 

一个年轻人看到日落，由于无法理解和表达日落在他心中唤起的激情，便得出结论：日落处想必是通往遥远世界的大门。

1) sees a sunset 和 concludes that ...为并列谓语动词，它们的主语是 A young man。 unable to understand or to express...作原因状语，表示“由于无法理解和表达日落在其心中激起的感情”。

that it rouses in him 作定语从句，修饰 the emotion。该从句中的it 指 a sunset。 

that it must be...作动词concludes的宾语从句。

that lies beyond 作定语从句,修饰a world, 意即”遥远的”。

beyond作副词。

原文：It is difficult for any of us in moments of intense aesthetic  [iːsˈθetɪk] experience to resist the suggestion that we are catching a glimpse of a light that shines down to us from a different realm of existence, different and, because the experience is intensely moving, in some way higher. 

无论是谁，在强烈感受到美的时刻，心中都不禁油生一种遐想：我们似乎瞥见从另一个世界射向我们的一线光芒，那个世界不仅不同于我们这个世界，而且由于美感的强烈感染，在某些方面比我们这个世界更美好。

2) It为先行主语，真正的主语是动词不定式 to resist the suggestion...

for any of us 这一介词短语实际是动词不定式 to resist 的逻辑主语。

in moments of intense aesthetic experience作状语, 意即“在强烈感受到美的时候”。

that we are catching... existence 为名词suggestion 的同位语从句。该从句中的 that shines down ...existence 作定语，修饰a light

different and... higher作非限制性定语，其中的different 和higher为并列成分，同时作定语，修饰the realm of existence

because...moving 作原因状语从句，意即“由于美感的强烈感染”。

in some way 在某种程度。

3) intense [ɪn'tens] adj. 强烈的

eg: After the intense pain of life, finally I came to understand I need a bit mundane, perhaps a bit like a little mundane.

剧烈的人生阵痛之后，终于明白了我需要一点世俗，或许想稍微世俗一点。

aesthetic  [iːsˈθetɪk] adj. 审美的 n. 美学；美感；审美观

eg: He is given to viewing life as if it were an aesthetic spectacle.

他喜欢观察生活，好象生活是一幅美的图景。

realm  [relm] n. 世界

eg: He must wait and see just how much he would make here in this perfectly marvelous realm. 

他得等着瞧瞧，在这个奥妙无穷的洞天福地里，他究竟能得到多大的好处。

原文：And, though the gleams blind and dazzle, yet do they convey a hint of beauty and serenity [sə'renəti] greater than we have known or imagined. 

虽然这光芒令人眼花缭乱，但它确实给予我们一种不曾经历和无法想象的美感和静谧的启示。

4) though the gleams blind and dazzle 作让步状语从句,blind 和dazzle为不及物动词,作该从句的并列谓语，意即“令人眼花缭乱”。

yet do they...中的助动词 do 起强调作用，在主语前面更具有强调的作用。

greater than...作定语，修饰beauty and serenity。 

than引导的是比较状语从句

5) gleam  [ɡliːm] n/v.  闪烁；发微光；隐约闪光；显得光洁明亮

eg: Once he looked up at me with a gleam of something like humor in his eyes.

有一次他抬头向我望了一眼，眼光里似乎带着些幽默的意味。

dazzle ['dæz(ə)l] n. 耀眼眩目；令人眼花缭乱；令人眼花缭乱的东西（或特性）

v. （强光等）使目眩；（美貌、技能等）使倾倒

eg:  He had an almost uncontrollable impulse to stand up and do one of his routines, dazzle them, show them what real talent looked like.

他差点控制不住自己的冲动，想要站起身来露一手，叫他们眼花缭乱，见识见识真正的天才到底是怎么回事。

a hint of/about... ......的提示，......的启示

eg: He broke off, with a hint of threat in his voice, his eyes fixed on her in hostility.

他戛然而止，话里带有一种威胁的口气，目光怀有敌意地停留在她身上。

serenity [sə'renəti] n. 宁静；平静；安详；从容

eg: I feel a sense of serenity and also like a very small part of something so much larger and greater.

我感受到宁静，也喜欢成为如此壮观的自然的很小的一部分。

原文：Greater too than we can describe; for language, which was invented to convey the meanings of this world, cannot readily be fitted to the uses of another.

这种美感和静谧是我们无法描述的，因为我们发明的语言是用来描述这个世界的含义，不能随便拿来去描述另一个世界。

6) Greater too than we can describe 是省略，greater 前面省略了The beauty and serenity is。than引导的是比较状语从句

for 为连词，引导原因状语从句，意即“由于”。which 引导的是非限定性定语从句，修饰 language。该从句中的动词不定式作目的状语

be fitted to适合于

eg:  They will buy a luggage carrier to be fitted to the vehicle.

他们会买一个与这个车相匹配的行李架。

原文：That all great art has this power of suggesting a world beyond is undeniable. 

不可否认，一切伟大的艺术都具有使人遐想到进入天外世界的魅力。

7) That all great art... beyond 作主语从句，is undeniable 是该句的谓语部分。of suggesting a world beyond 作定语，修饰 this power

undeniable [.ʌndɪ'naɪəb(ə)l] adj. 不可否认的；确凿的

eg:  Let me go straight to the point: China has undeniable historical claim over the Nansha Islands (Spratlys).

请恕我直言：中国在历史上不可争辩的拥有南沙群岛主权。

原文：In some moods, Nature shares it.

在某种状态下，大自然也有这种魅力。

8) it是指前面一句中this power of suggesting a world beyond. Nature 在这里指大自然，作专有名词，故大写。

原文：There is no sky in June so blue that it does not point forward to a bluer, no sunset so beautiful that it does not waken the vision of a greater beauty, a vision which passes before it is fully glimpsed, and in passing leaves an indefinable longing and regret. 

六月蔚蓝的天空总使人遥想一个更加蔚蓝的苍穹；美丽的落日总会引起一个更加绚丽的景象未及饱览便一闪即逝，并在消逝中给人留下不可名状的渴望和惆怅。

9) 该句采用排比结构(parallel structure 或 parallelism), 即把结构相同或相似、意义相关、语气一致的几个词组或句子并列使用的句子。排比句便子表达强烈的感情,突出所强调的内容，增强语言的气势。与此同时，由于句子整齐,节奏分明,也增强了语言的韵律美.

该句中采用3个动词不定式+介词短语结构，构成排比结构该何中相同的结构是 no sky...so blue that it does not...和no sunset so beautiful that it does not... 由于采用了这种排比结构，使该句对大自然的描写更为生动感人。

a bluer 更加蔚蓝的苍穹。

a vision which passes... regret 作 the vision of a greater beauty的同位语，其中的 which 作定语，修饰a vision

passes 和 leaves 同作 which 的谓语。in passing 作状语，修饰leaves...

10) glimpse [ɡlɪmps] v. 瞥见 n. 领悟；概况；见识；一睹 ~ (of sb/sth).~ (at sb/sth)

eg:  I only caught a glimpse of him sitting in the car, so I can't tell exactly what he looked like.

我只瞥见他坐在车里，所以我无法确切说出他长得什么样。

indefinable  [.ɪndɪ'faɪnəb(ə)l]  adj. 难以定义的；无法解释的; n. 难以下定义的事物

eg: Though she had an indefinable urge to protest, she admitted that things had indeed returned to normal.

尽管她还有想去抵抗的冲动，但是她也承认，一切已经恢复了正常。

原文：But, if this world is not merely a bad joke, life a vulgar flare amid the cool radiance of the stars, and existence an empty laugh braying across the mysteries; if these intimations of a something behind and beyond are not evil humour born of indigestion, or whimsies sent by the devil to mock and madden us. If, in a word, beauty means something, yet we must not seek to interpret the meaning.

11) 该句也是一个典型的排比结构,由 3个并列的条件状语从句构成。主句是 yet we must not seek to interpret the meaning。

在第1个条件状语从中，life 和existence 前面省略了if，后面省略了 is not merely。 braying across the mysteries 为现在分词短语作定语，修饰an empty laugh。

第2个条件中evil humour和whimsies 为该条件句中的并列表语。born of indigestion 和 sent by the devil to mock and madden us 作语分别修饰humour 和whimsies。

a something中的something作名词，故其前用不定冠词。

behind and beyond 玄妙的。

in a word 总而言之。

12) vulgar [ˈvʌlɡə(r)] adj. 平庸的; 粗俗的；粗野的；不雅的

eg:  Daisy is just a vulgar superficiality and hedonism, there is no sense of moral responsibility of the woman.

黛西只是个庸俗肤浅、贪图享受、毫无道德责任感的女人。

radiance  ['reɪdiəns] n. 发光; 容光焕发；红光满面；

eg: Like a rising sun, Shanghai is shining with boundless radiance and brilliant color.

上海就像一轮红日，光芒四射，鲜艳夺目。

bray  [breɪ] v. （驴子）嘶叫；以刺耳的高声讲话（或笑）n. 布雷；驴叫声；(喇叭)嘟嘟声；乱哄哄的抗议

intimation [.ɪntɪ'meɪʃ(ə)n] n. 暗示

eg: Its first intimation of death came as long ago as 1993.

死亡的第一丝征兆早在1993年便已显现。

whimsy  ['wɪmzi] n.  怪念头；古怪可笑的举动；吊儿郎当；随心所欲

eg: Yesterday I suddenly get a interesting idea, but it is not mature, and this idea is a little whimsy.

我昨天突然想到了一个有趣的观点，不过还不成熟，而且这个观点有些怪异哦。

原文：If we glimpse the unutterable, it is unwise to try to utter it, nor should we seek to invest with significance that which we cannot grasp. Beauty in terms of our human meanings is meaningless.

如果我瞥见了只可意会不可言传的事物，企图把它说出来，那是不明智的；对于我们不理解的事物，我们也不应该去赋予它某种意义。用对我们人类有意义的词解释美是没有意义的。

13) it 为先行主语，真正的主语是动词不定式 to try to utter it。其中的it指 the unutterable。 nor 为否定词,置于句首，故该句为倒装句。

that 指 the unutterable, 作动词invest 的宾语。

which引导定语从句,修饰 that。

14）unutterable  [ʌnˈʌt(ə)rəb(ə)l] adj. 难以言表的；说不出的

eg: I had scarcely seen him when I was filled with unutterable joy and inconceivable bliss

我一看见他，心中就有说不出的愉悦。

invest sb.with sth.授予某人某物，把某物赋予某人

eg:  Sukarno was persuaded to invest him with emergency powers and then, politely but firmly, was made to stand aside.

苏加诺被劝说授予他紧急状态下的全权，然后就被礼貌但是坚决的踢开了。

eg: In term of money, he's quite rich. But he is not always happy.

就金钱而言，他很富有，但他不总是幸福。
